What is the story or visual narrative presented? Is it abstract or representational (figures and recognizable objects)? Explain:
It was basically a projection from an invisible screen to the dark wall (but I guess the screen was on the other side of keyboard). The words showing on the wall kept changing and we could hear the robot-like pronunciation if we put on those headphones. Under the image, there was a keyboard on table and 2 headphones by both sides. I believe it was representational because it clearly showed recognizable English words.
What is the medium (paint, metal, stone, photography, video, etc.)? How has the artist/sculptor used the “tools” of the artist? Describe the “elements”: color, value, line, texture, shape, form, space. Describe how these elements are organized in the composition: unity, contrast, repetition, balance, etc. List:
I believe the artwork was presented by video of randomly shifting the vocabulary, and someone in the video read the word at the same time, the keyboard was also a medium which could remind people of the power of technology. The artist used many smaller white words as background to highlight the colorful big word that was continuously changing. I saw the sense of future and mystery as the main elements. The background words were well organized and balanced looked like a paragraph, but the big bright words kept changing with repetition sometimes.
What is the relationship between this work and its environment?
The artist put this artwork to a such dark environment, I guess it was because the darker environment was, the brighter images would be presented, which could emphasize the importance of technology and also leave some mysterious impression to the audience.
What is the title of the work? Does this help explain the “artist intent”?
The title was Vertical Music. That did help me understand what the artist was trying to tell us. Once we put on headphones, the sound was very straight forward and we could hear the words one righter after another with no extension.
What is the date of the work and what does this tell you about the historical and/or cultural context of the work?
This was filmed at a high speed in 2012, it told us vertical music was informed by Steve Reich’s 1967 conceptual score Slow Motion Sound. In that time, artist slowed down the voice and recorded without lowering its pitch to show the impossibility of technology in that time.
What does the work mean to you? What is your emotional and intellectual response to the work (there are no wrong answers)? If you had choices why did you select this work?
I personally thought it was a way to show the technology in the old time, but they still look forward to new invention. I felt very real for this work, because as we are getting used to good and efficient things, we still keep looking for something better, no matter it is life, technology or music. I chose to share this artwork because it got my curiosity and my human nature that always wanting to explore.
Is it any good (judging)? How do you know? Explain:
It was good because it could get people’s attention and curiosity, and people also could feel such traditional music in a technological way. At least I enjoyed the sound and the substantially changing images.
What else do you want to know about this work of art, what do you wonder?
I might wonder why they present random words. It could be better for me if I can understand the meaning of the series of words.
